Born in Manchester, James Goldrick grew up in Sydney. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Organ from the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music, studying with Dr Philip Matthias. At this time, he was Organ Scholar of Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle, winning the Michael Dudman Prize for organ.
Upon graduation, James commenced as inaugural Organ Scholar at St Mary’s Cathedral. James was later appointed Assistant Organist, daily accompanying the services of Vespers and Mass. James attained his Graduate Diploma in Education from ACU and studied organ improvisation in France with Nigel Allcoat.
James was appointed Assistant Director of Music of St Stephen's Cathedral, Brisbane, and Director of Music of St John’s College, within the University of Queensland. He regularly performed with both the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Queensland Youth Orchestra.
In 2018, James relocated to the USA for postgraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, majoring in Choral Conducting, studying with Professor Carmen-Helena Téllez, as well as Organ with Dr Paul Walker and Voice with Alek Shrader.
He directed the Notre Dame Children’s Choir which undertook acclaimed tours of the USA and the UK, including the cathedrals of York, Leeds, and Liverpool. From 2019, James was Music Director of First United Methodist Church, South Bend.
In 2020 James graduated from Notre Dame with a Masters of Sacred Music. Upon graduation from Notre Dame, James was awarded the Driscoll Award for outstanding services to the community. In 2020, James was appointed Associate Director of Music and Organist of the Choir School of the Cathedral of The Madeleine, Salt Lake City, USA.
